Glinda & the Wicked Witch

In 1939, MGM gave the world two witches and a very clear rule for telling them apart. The good one arrived in a pink bubble, wore a sparkly gown and a crown, and spoke in a voice like a music box. The bad one showed up in a puff of red smoke with green skin, a black hat and a strong opinion about ruby slippers. Almost ninety years later, after two Wicked movies turned the pair into best friends with a complicated past, Glinda and the Wicked Witch of the West are one of the most fun best-friend or couples costumes you can pick, especially if one of you has always wanted to cackle at a party. HalloweenCostumes.com sells the classic movie versions of both under its FUN Costumes label: a Women's Wizard of Oz Glinda Costume on sale for $59.99, down from $79.99, and a Women's Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch Costume Dress on sale for $54.99, down from $69.99.

That's $114.98 for the pair, or $119.98 if the witch needs an X-Large. For a good witch and a bad one, that's a pretty balanced budget.

These are the 1939 film versions, not the Wicked musical looks, so Glinda is in the pink gown with butterflies and the witch is in black with a pointy hat, no Elphaba glasses. The two costumes have very different reviews. Glinda has 24 of them and a mixed 3.9-star average, with a lot of sizing complaints. The standard witch costume has none yet, but the plus-size version of the same design has five, all five stars. Here's what's in each box and what buyers said.

Glinda, pink from top to bottom

The Glinda costume (item FUN1706AD) is officially licensed and a Made By Us exclusive. It includes two pieces: a dress and a crown. The fabrics are 100% polyester satin, jersey knit and knit mesh.

The dress is where all the sparkle lives. The skirt and bodice front have a satin base layer with glittery knit mesh on top, and there's a built-in petticoat to give the skirt some volume. The bodice back is jersey knit, which adds stretch. It pulls over your head and has an elastic waistband, so there's no zipper to fight with. The sleeves are puffy leg-o'-mutton style with elastic at mid-arm, and there's a clear faux gem at the center of the V neckline. Foam-backed pink butterflies sit at the waist and shoulder, which is a sweet touch.

The crown closes with hook-and-loop and is decorated with glitter and pink faux gems. It's the finishing touch, although as you'll see, it's also one of the things buyers had mixed feelings about.

No wand is included. The site suggests a Sparkling Fairy Witch Costume Wand Accessory for $4.99, which is about the cheapest way to make a costume look complete. You can't be Glinda without something to tap people on the head with.

How Glinda fits

Glinda comes in X-Small through X-Large, all at $59.99, with plus sizes sold separately.

The chest runs from 33 inches on the X-Small to 43 on the X-Large. The elastic waist has a wide range: 25 to 34 inches on the X-Small, up to 35 to 42 on the X-Large. Sleeves are 24 to 26 inches. The dress is long, 53.5 inches on the X-Small up to 57.5 on the X-Large, which puts it at the floor or just above on most women.

On paper, it looks like a forgiving dress. The reviews say otherwise.

What Glinda buyers said

The Glinda costume has 24 reviews and a 3.9-star average. The breakdown is split: 62% five-star, 4% four-star, 12% three-star, 4% two-star and 17% one-star. That's a lot of people who loved it and a noticeable group who really didn't.

The happy reviews are very happy. Melisa Lombard, who's 5'11" and bought an X-Large, wrote, "This costume gives my childhood heart so much joy! I always wanted to be Glinda forever and ever ago and realizing as an adult I can be that I was so happy! Such a sensational costume the details are crazy good." DDB, who's 5 feet tall and bought a Medium, said, "I was nervous about the length bc I'm just 5 ft but it worked. I steamed it gently and it looked even better! Got lots of compliments!" Glenn, who titled the review "Great Glenda the Witch," wrote, "My friends loved it."

The unhappy reviews mostly land on one thing: the sleeves and upper body. Michelle D, who's 5'2" and wears a size 6, gave it three stars: "Nice but runs small I am a size 6 and wear a size 32 c bra. The arms and bodice were very snug." Susie Whitehurst gave it one star: "Not at all true to size. Arm sleeves very tight and chest too tight to consider wearing." Another buyer who ordered a Large said, "Runs very small. Sleeves are extremely tight, and the lining is very thin."

One reviewer who ordered a Large went further: "I thought I ordered an adult size large but it was WAY TOO SMALL." Her advice was to "order 2X larger if you are an adult."

But then there's the opposite problem. Jessika, who's 5'4" and bought a Small, wrote, "Sleeves were pretty snug, the rest of the dress was huge. I ordered a small and am drowning in it. Such a weird fit, so disappointing a few days before Halloween." And a buyer who ordered an X-Large said the dress "was too small and too big at the same time."

So what's going on? Read the reviews together and a pattern shows up. The sleeves are tight on almost everyone. The chest and bodice run small for some people. The skirt and waist are roomy, thanks to the elastic. If you have any muscle in your arms, or a fuller bust, size up. Sheryl Cundiff did exactly that and was glad: "I normally wear size small,but I decided to size up just in case it ran small. So glad I did! The medium fit me perfectly."

If you're sizing up, the elastic waist should keep the bigger size from looking sloppy, and you can always add a sash or a ribbon belt to cinch it.

About that crown

The same X-Large buyer who found the fit strange was also disappointed by the crown: "The crown is cut out of foam paper and was falling apart when it arrived." Another reviewer described it more kindly, as "a soft crown," alongside "felt butterflies."

So the crown is lightweight foam, not a hard tiara. That makes it comfortable, but it won't feel like royalty. If it matters to you, the site sells an Adult Sparkle Witch Costume Crown for $9.99, and there are plenty of plastic or metal tiaras at party stores that will look more like the real thing.

One more comment is worth knowing. A 2021 reviewer called the dress "Itchy and cheap." A thin long-sleeve top underneath might help if you're sensitive to glitter mesh.

The Wicked Witch, in classic black

The Wicked Witch costume (item JLJLF1040AD) is also a FUN Costumes design and officially licensed. It includes three pieces: a dress, a pouch and a hat. The fabric is 100% polyester poplin.

The dress has an old-fashioned silhouette with decorative lacing through metal eyelets on the bodice. It closes with hook-and-loop at the center back and has an elastic back waistband. The sleeves are leg-o'-mutton style, "puffed above elbow, fitted over forearms," just like the witch's in the movie. The pouch is foam-backed, about 5 inches wide and 6 inches tall, with cords and a closure. And the hat is a tall black cone with memory wire in the brim, so you can shape it into the classic witchy curve.

That hat alone is a big deal. A lot of witch costumes leave out the hat or include a floppy one. This one's built in, and it's shapeable.

Halloween.com, which sells the same costume, notes that it's spot clean only: "do not wash, do not tumble dry, do not dry clean." So keep it away from the punch bowl.

How the Wicked Witch fits

The witch comes in X-Small through X-Large. X-Small through Large are $54.99, and X-Large is $59.99.

The chest runs from 34 inches on the X-Small to 43 on the X-Large, with an elastic waist from 24 to 34 inches on the X-Small up to 33 to 43 on the X-Large. Sleeves are 26 to 30 inches, which is noticeably longer than Glinda's. Dress length goes from 52 to 56 inches.

For comparison, the witch's size chart is slightly more generous than Glinda's in the chest and sleeves at the same size, which fits the movie. The good witch is all puffs and sparkle. The bad one is covered from wrist to ankle.

What witch buyers said

The standard witch costume has no reviews yet. The plus-size version (item JLJLF1040PL), which uses the same design in sizes 1X through 5X for $59.99 to $69.99, has five reviews and a 4.8-star average. They're all positive, and they're worth reading.

Alicia, who's 5'3" and bought a 3X, wrote, "This costume is worth the price. I took measurements according to the size chart and went with the recommended size for my numbers. It fits perfect and is well made."

Erica Wyatt had the opposite of the Glinda problem. "From past costume failures I decided to go up a size, but found out after I tried it on I didn't need to. Even in a bigger size it fit well. I loved the flow of it. It was a hit at our annual Boo-Bash. Everyone loved my costume and I had a special suprise from a certain monkey!" (That monkey, presumably, had wings.)

Linda Dockery, in August 2026, titled her review "I am in 'Witch Wonderland' over my Wizard of Oz Witch Costume!" She wrote, "This costume is nicely made, and came with a great witch's hat and a little pouch, sewn into the front. It fits pretty well, altho I wish it was just a tiny bit looser. The material is not flimsy either, and should hold up well for years to come!"

Captaintita, who's tall, said, "Awesome costume, fits perfect and I'm tall. The hat is a little tight, but it does stay on well." And she had the best line of the whole batch: "There's no broom but lets be real I have one of those at home *cackle*."

So the plus-size version fits true to size, and buyers praise the fabric and the hat. That's promising for the standard version too, though it's worth remembering that none of the standard sizes have been reviewed yet.

Finishing the witch

The witch's face is half the costume. The site sells a Wicked Witch Makeup Kit on sale for $1.49, which is one of the cheapest items you'll ever see on a costume site and probably the most important part of this look. Go green everywhere that shows: face, neck, ears, hands. Nothing ruins a Wicked Witch faster than a pale strip at the hairline.

For hair, there's a Black/Purple Witch Wig for $9.99. For a broom, the Magic Wicked Witch Broom Prop is $12.99, or you can do what Captaintita did and grab the one from your kitchen. Women's Witch Shoes are $39.99 to $49.99, although black boots from your closet will work fine since the dress is long.

If you want something fancier, there's a Women's Premium Wizard of Oz Wicked Witch Costume for $89.99, down from $99.99, with a crepe dress, brocade corset, cape, purse and a veiled hat. It has no reviews yet.

Finishing Glinda

Beyond the wand, Glinda needs her hair and shoes. The site suggests a Long Red Wavy Women's Wig for $19.99 and Clear Princess Shoes for Women for $49.99, which look like Glinda would wear them to float into Munchkinland. White ballet slippers at $19.99 are a cheaper, comfier choice.

Want to add a third friend? The site sells Women's Red Sequin Costume Shoes for $29.99 to $34.99, a Gingham Bow Headband for $3.99 and a Toto in a Basket Accessory for $39.99, which is basically everything Dorothy needs besides the blue dress. Add a Tin Woodsman Makeup Kit for $1.49 and you're halfway to the whole yellow brick road.

Summary

The Glinda costume is a pink satin and glitter-mesh gown with butterflies, a built-in petticoat and a foam crown. Yes, with a warning about Glinda. At $114.98 for both, you're getting two instantly recognizable classic movie costumes, and the witch in particular looks like good value for the price. Glinda's reviews are more mixed, but a lot of buyers still loved it, especially the ones who sized up.

I'll admit the Glinda reviews surprised me. You'd expect the good witch to have the good reviews. In this case, the wicked one seems to have been built better. That's a plot twist even the Wicked movies didn't try.

So size Glinda up if your arms or chest are anywhere near the top of her chart, and consider a sturdier crown. For the witch, measure and trust the chart. Grab the $1.49 green makeup kit, a broom from the kitchen and a pair of sparkly shoes for your good witch. Then decide in advance who gets to say "I'll get you, my pretty," because you'll only get to say it so many times before the rest of the party joins in.
