Gru started out in 2010 as a supervillain with a plan to steal the moon, a basement full of yellow henchmen and absolutely no interest in kids. Three adopted daughters later, he'd gone soft, and in Despicable Me 2 he met Lucy Wilde, an Anti-Villain League agent with red hair, a lipstick taser and a habit of driving her car into the ocean on purpose. They got married by the end of the movie and have been the franchise's power couple ever since. For Halloween, Gru and Lucy are a great pick if you want something recognizable that isn't a superhero or a Disney princess, and an easy add-on if your kids are going as Minions. HalloweenCostumes.com sells both: a Deluxe Despicable Me Gru Costume for Men by Disguise for $69.99 and a Despicable Me Lucy Wilde Costume for Women by its own FUN Costumes label for $79.99.

That brings the pair to $149.98. That's in the same neighborhood as taking the whole family to a Minions movie once the popcorn and the Icee refills nobody really needed are added up.

These two costumes don't have many reviews. Gru has one, and it's a rough one. Lucy has two, and they both say the same thing about the wig. So this review leans heavily on the product details and size charts, plus the few real comments buyers have left.

Gru, with the scarf and the stare

The Deluxe Gru costume (item DI167459) is officially licensed and a HalloweenCostumes.com exclusive. It includes four pieces: a jacket, pants, a molded foam mask and a scarf. Everything is 100% polyester.

The jacket is the look. It has padded shoulders, a collar, oversized lapels and a printed zipper down the front, and it closes with hook-and-loop strips down the back. The listing calls it a "sleek, tailored jacket," which is a funny thing to say about a garment designed to make you look like you have no neck. The scarf is a knit print design, the gray-and-black striped one Gru has worn since the first movie. The pants have an elastic waist.

The mask is the centerpiece. It's molded foam that "captures Gru's distinctive bald head and pointed nose," and it's held on with an elastic band. The site confirms in its Q&A that it's foam, not latex. It also says the eye holes allow only "limited vision," which is becoming a theme with character masks.

A few Q&A answers are worth knowing before you buy. One shopper asked about a clear plastic mold inside the mask, and the site said it's "a structural part of the form that helps it hold its shape" and is meant to stay in. Another asked about glasses, and the answer was basically "maybe": the mask is "designed to sit over the face rather than accommodate glasses underneath," so it depends on your frames. How Gru fits

Gru comes in Medium, Large and X-Large, all at $69.99, with plus sizes sold separately. There's no Small.

The jacket is very roomy, which makes sense, since Gru is shaped a bit like a refrigerator with a scarf. The Medium has a 52-inch chest and a 46-inch jacket waist. The Large is 54 and 48, and the X-Large is 56 and 50. The sleeves are 25 inches in every size, and jacket length goes from 29 to 31 inches.

The pants are where you need to pay attention. The elastic waist is generous: 26 to 36 inches on the Medium, 30 to 40 on the Large and 35 to 45 on the X-Large. But the inseam is short. It's 27 inches on the Medium, 28 on the Large and 29 on the X-Large. Most adult men wear somewhere around 30 to 32. On most people, these pants are going to stop well above the ankle.

The good news is that Gru's look hides that easily. He wears tall black boots, and the site suggests Men's Tall Black Costume Boots for $59.99. Any black boots you already own will work too. Tuck the pants in, and nobody will ever know they're high-waters.

The site's Q&A also has a handy real-life sizing example. A shopper asked whether a Medium would fit her husband, who's 160 pounds with a 34-inch waist, and the answer was that the Medium's elastic "stretches from 26" to 36"," so it "should work well."

The one Gru review

Here's the less fun part. The Gru costume has one review, from Peter H in October 2025, and it's one star, titled "I guess it's a costume."

"It's a costume I guess I expected a little better quality. Shipping box was undersized and weak, the mask was crushed and dented. As I needed it for the following day, I had to pack out the mask with towels and foam and use a hair dryer to get it back to a decent shape. After wearing it a short time the foam inside fell off. Knowing what I know know I would not recommend purchasing."

That's a detailed complaint, and it points to two separate problems. One is shipping: a foam mask in a box that's too small can arrive crushed. The other is build: he says the foam inside "fell off" after a short time. It's only one review, and shipping damage can happen to any product. But it's the only review there is, so it's worth planning for.

The practical advice is to order early. If the mask arrives dented, you'll have time to reshape it, the way Peter did with towels and a hair dryer, or to get a replacement. Don't order it for a party the next day. And keep a bit of strong double-sided tape or fabric glue handy in case any of the inside foam comes loose.

Other ways to be Gru

If the full foam mask sounds like more than you want, the site has two alternatives.

The listing describes Gru's "nose that looks like it's plotting something," which is honestly the best line in any of these listings. It has no reviews yet.

If you go the kit route, a black zip-up jacket and black pants from your own closet will get you most of the way there. The simplest option of all is an Adult Bald Cap for $6.99, a gray-striped scarf and a very serious Eastern European accent.

Lucy, fully dressed

The Lucy Wilde costume (item FUN94294AD) is the more complete of the two. It's officially licensed and a Made By Us exclusive, and it includes five pieces: a dress, a jacket, a scarf, a wig and a badge. Everything is 100% polyester.

The dress is a jersey knit pullover with shoulder straps you can adjust for length. Over it goes Lucy's signature teal trench-style jacket in poly woven twill, with a button-down front and a posable wire in the collar, so you can pop it up like a secret agent who just spotted a villain across the room. The scarf is polka-dot chiffon. The badge is a faux vinyl badge holder with a metal snap closure and printed AVL graphics, which is a nice detail for fans who know what the Anti-Villain League is.

And yes, a wig is included, which is rare. It's a faux hair wig styled in a curly bun, Lucy's red updo. That should be a big selling point. Unfortunately, as the reviews show, it's also the weakest part of the costume.

How Lucy fits

Lucy comes in X-Small through X-Large, all at $79.99. The listing includes a sizing note that says "Runs Small," so take that seriously.

The dress chest runs from 29 inches on the X-Small to 39.5 on the X-Large. The Medium is 33 inches at the chest, 29.5 at the waist and 35 at the hips. The dress length is short, from 32.25 to 34.75 inches, which puts it around mid-thigh to just above the knee on most women, the way Lucy wears it.

The jacket is bigger, since it goes over the dress. Jacket chest runs from 34 to 44.5 inches, and it's long: 43 inches on the X-Small up to 46.75 on the X-Large. Sleeves are 23.75 to 25.25 inches. The scarf is 73 inches in most sizes and 77 in Large and X-Large.

In the Q&A, a petite shopper who sometimes wears youth XL asked whether the costume runs small, since the chart pointed her to a Medium. The site's answer was to measure at home and trust the chart, because "We do the accurate measurements in house." So that's the plan. Measure your chest, waist and hips, and if you're between sizes, go up.

There's one more thing to know before you order: the Lucy costume is non-returnable if the package is opened. That makes sizing even more important. Measure first, order once.

Lucy has two reviews, and they agree on almost everything: the costume is cute, and the wig isn't.

She still recommended it.

So the wig either runs small or arrives flattened, or both. The good news is that a replacement is cheap. The site suggests its Scooby Doo Daphne Wig for $14.99, which is a red wig you could pin into a bun. You could also try steaming or gently reshaping the included one before giving up on it.

The rest of the Lucy look

To finish Lucy, you mostly need shoes and legs. The site suggests White Patent Platform Gogo Boots for $49.99 to $59.99, Women's Beige Opaque Tights on sale for $2.99 and Women's Beige Sheer Pantyhose for $9.99. Women's White Baby Doll Heels are another option at $39.99.

Order both costumes early so you have time to fix anything that arrives crushed. Plan a backup wig for Lucy, tuck Gru's pants into some black boots and keep a hair dryer nearby for the mask. It's not quite stealing the moon, but it's a pretty good heist for one night.
