The Saja Boy Costume Lets Your Kid Play the Villain Everyone Secretly Liked. It's Just a Robe and a Hat, Though

  • Emilia Westwood

Every great girl group needs a rival boy band, and in KPop Demon Hunters that rival happened to be made of actual demons. The Saja Boys were put together by the villain Gwi-Ma to steal HUNTR/X's fans and bring down the barrier that keeps demons out of the human world, and the plan almost worked, mostly because their songs were catchy. "Soda Pop" and "Your Idol" ended up on the real Billboard charts alongside "Golden," as part of a soundtrack that put four songs in the Hot 100's top ten at once, which had never happened before. Their name comes from the jeoseung saja, the grim reaper of Korean folklore, and on stage they perform in black hanbok and traditional horsehair hats. If your kid has decided he'd rather be the demon than the hunter this year, HalloweenCostumes.com sells the Boy's K-Pop Demon Hunters Classic Saja Boy Costume, made by Disguise, for $49.99.

That's the same price as some sizes of the Rumi costume on the same site, and it makes the Saja Boys the obvious pick for a brother, a cousin or a friend who wants to join a HUNTR/X group without wearing a crop top.

There's not a lot of information about this one. The listing is short, the costume has no reviews on HalloweenCostumes.com or its sister site Halloween.com, and the product page doesn't list materials or closures. So this review sticks to what's confirmed, fills in what other stores say about the same Disguise costume, and covers sizing, add-ons and the one real parent comment worth knowing about.

What's in the bag

The Saja Boy costume (item DI249749) includes two pieces: a hat and a robe. That's the whole list on the HalloweenCostumes.com page.

Other stores selling the same Disguise costume give a bit more detail. A Canadian retailer, Club Jouet, lists the item as "1 robe with attached shirt" and "1 hat," with the same product code, and Party Expert describes it the same way. So the robe likely has a shirt front built in, which means your kid doesn't need to find a matching shirt to wear underneath. That's a small but real convenience on Halloween night, when every extra layer is another thing someone has to remember to put on.

The HalloweenCostumes.com listing doesn't say what the hat looks like beyond "hat," but the Saja Boys' stage look in the movie centers on a black wide-brimmed traditional hat, the gat, over a black robe. The product photos are the best guide to how close this one gets.

The description is mostly mood. The listing says it captures "bold performance style with a supernatural edge" and "K-pop flair and demon-hunting attitude." Halloween.com adds that it's made with "ease of movement so the hunt never has to stop." That's a fun line for a costume worn by a demon who's technically being hunted, but we'll allow it.

What the listing doesn't say

Here's the list of unknowns, which is longer than usual. The HalloweenCostumes.com page doesn't list the fabric, the closure type, the robe color or whether the hat has a chin strap. It also doesn't say whether the costume is officially licensed, although other stores describe the Disguise version as official, and Disguise makes the site's other licensed KPop Demon Hunters costumes, including Rumi.

None of that is a red flag on its own. Kids' costume listings are often short. But it does mean you're mostly buying from the photos, so look at them closely before ordering.

One more thing: Club Jouet notes that hats are non-exchangeable and non-refundable for hygiene reasons in its store. HalloweenCostumes.com doesn't say that about this costume, but it's a good reminder to check the return policy before the hat gets tried on by every kid in the house.

How the sizes work

The Saja Boy costume comes in three kids' sizes, 4/6, 7/8 and 10/12, all at $49.99. The size chart is detailed and includes height and weight, which is the most useful part for kids.

Size 4/6 fits kids 43 to 49.5 inches tall and 36 to 47 pounds, with a 26-inch chest, 23-inch waist and 26-inch hips. Size 7/8 fits kids 50 to 53.5 inches tall and 48 to 60 pounds, with a 26.5-inch chest, 24.5-inch waist and 27.5-inch hips. And size 10/12 fits kids 54 to 58.5 inches tall and 60 to 87 pounds, with a 28-inch chest, 26.5-inch waist and 30-inch hips. The chart also lists inseams, from 19 to 26 inches depending on size.

Two things stand out. First, the chest measurements barely change between sizes, only 2 inches from the smallest to the biggest. That's normal for a loose robe, since the fit comes from the overall length more than the chest. So go by height first. Second, the biggest size tops out at 58.5 inches, which is just under 4'11". Tall 11- and 12-year-olds may already be too big, and there's no adult version listed on the site.

If your kid is between sizes, go up. A robe that's a little long is fine. It's a demon's robe, after all. A robe that stops halfway down the leg looks less like a grim reaper and more like a bathrobe.

What one real parent said

There are no buyer reviews for this costume on HalloweenCostumes.com or Halloween.com yet. But one parent's post about the Saja Boy look is worth mentioning, because it gets at a real question: whether to buy it at all.

A TikTok user who goes by @audball2013 posted a DIY version of a "Your Idol" Saja Boy costume for her son, and her caption summed up how a lot of parents feel this year: "Sure you could buy a costume but they were pricey this year and I love making my kids' costumes! This one took only 2 hours to make (including drying time) so it was worth it to me and my son LOVES IT!" Her supply list included a top hat from Walmart's Halloween section, two black witch hats from Michaels, a Harry Potter-style black cape from Amazon and plastic witch fingers and black gloves from Dollar Tree.

That's a very different route from a $49.99 store-bought set, and it's not for everyone. It takes time, a glue gun and some spray paint. But it's a good reminder that the Saja Boys' look is basically black clothes, a dramatic hat and a lot of attitude. If you're crafty, you can get close for less. If you're not, the Disguise costume does the work for you.

What to add

The site doesn't sell a Saja Boy wig, and they're not really needed. The Saja Boys have dark hair, and most kids can go with their own. The recommended add-ons on Halloween.com are more interesting: metallic purple face and body paint, black foundation and greasepaint. That fits the movie, where the Saja Boys' demon side shows up as purple patterns on their skin.

A little purple face paint along the cheek or neck is an easy way to make the costume look more like a demon and less like a choir robe. Use a gentle, kid-safe makeup and test it on a small patch first, especially for sensitive skin.

For shoes, the site suggests Combat Military Kid's Costume Boots for $24.99 to $29.99. Black sneakers or dress shoes from home will work just as well, since the robe is long.

As for props, the site doesn't sell anything Saja Boy-specific. A pair of black gloves, like the Dollar Tree ones in that TikTok supply list, adds a finished touch for very little money. The site's Zoey Spirit Blades at $19.99 belong to HUNTR/X, so they'd be a bit of a crossover for a Saja Boy.

Keeping a Saja Boy warm

Good news here: a robe is one of the warmest costume shapes there is. With the attached shirt front, it covers most of the body, and there's room underneath for a long-sleeve shirt and leggings or sweatpants on a cold night. That makes it a better pick than the sleeveless Rumi romper for families in colder places, and parents in Minnesota or Michigan will appreciate it.

The one thing to watch is length. A long robe can catch on stairs and car doors, and little kids trip on long hems. For the 4/6 size especially, make sure the robe isn't dragging on the ground before heading out for trick-or-treating.

Building the whole cast

The Saja Boy costume works best alongside HUNTR/X. HalloweenCostumes.com sells the Girl's KPop Demon Hunters Classic Rumi Costume for $39.99 to $49.99, the Girl's Mira Classic Costume for $34.99 to $49.99 and the Girl's Zoey Classic Costume for $39.99, all by Disguise. The Rumi wig is $39.99, and Mira and Zoey wigs are $29.99 each.

For a sibling group, a Saja Boy with a HUNTR/X trio tells the whole story of the movie. And for a family, one kid as Jinu, the Saja Boys' leader, and one as Rumi is a very sweet pairing, since their storyline is the emotional center of the film.

There's also the KPop Demon Hunters Derpy Costume Head for $69.99, for anyone who wants to be the tiger. That one might be a hit with the youngest sibling, who doesn't want to be a hunter or a demon but would be very happy to be a big blue cat.

Summary

The Classic Saja Boy costume from Disguise is a two-piece kids' set with a robe and a hat, priced at $49.99 in sizes 4/6 to 10/12. The listing is short and there are no reviews yet, but other stores describe the same costume as a robe with an attached shirt and a hat. It's a warm, easy costume for kids who want to be the rival boy band, and it fits right into a HUNTR/X group. Purple face paint and a pair of black gloves finish the look.

So, is it worth it?

For KPop Demon Hunters fans who want to be the villain, yes. At $49.99, it's priced like the other kids' costumes from the movie. It covers more of the body than the girls' outfits, which makes it a good choice for cold Halloweens and for kids who don't like wearing short sleeves or shorts.

I'll admit it's hard to be excited about a costume with such a short product description and no reviews. That's the real risk. But the look is simple enough that a robe and a hat get you most of the way there, and the rest is purple face paint and your kid's best idol pose.

So check your kid's height against the chart, size up if he's between sizes, and look closely at the product photos. Grab some purple face paint and black gloves. Then prepare yourself, because if one kid is a Saja Boy and another is Rumi, you're going to be hearing "Your Idol" and "Golden" at full volume from the back seat, and they will absolutely argue about which one is better.

Pros:
  • Includes a robe and a hat for $49.99
  • Other retailers describe the robe as having an attached shirt front, so fewer layers to find
  • A long robe is warmer than most kids' costumes, with room for layers
  • Clear size chart with height and weight for each size
  • Pairs easily with the site's Rumi, Mira and Zoey costumes
Cons:
  • No reviews yet on HalloweenCostumes.com or Halloween.com
  • The listing doesn't specify materials, closures or robe color
  • The biggest size only fits kids up to 58.5 inches tall
  • No adult version listed on the site
  • Long hems can be a trip hazard for smaller kids
