The Deluxe Moana Costume Gets the Movie Look Right. Just Don't Count on the Sash Reaching
Moana has had a busy decade for a girl who spent most of her first movie arguing with the ocean. Disney's animated Moana came out in 2016, Moana 2 arrived in 2024 and opened to a huge $225 million in the U.S., and this July, the live-action version hit theaters with newcomer Catherine Laga'aia as Moana and Dwayne Johnson back as Maui. That one had a rougher start. The Hollywood Reporter said it "got off to a rocky start," with a $43 million domestic opening and $95 million worldwide, although audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore, and kids under 18 gave it an A+. Whichever version your household loves, the costume is the same: a red-and-cream tapa-print top and skirt, a necklace with the Heart of Te Fiti, and a lot of hair. HalloweenCostumes.com sells a Deluxe Disney Moana Costume for Women under its FUN Costumes label for $79.99 to $89.99, depending on size.
That price covers the dress and a sash. Everything else is extra, so a full Moana look costs more like $130 before you get to the hair.
The Deluxe Moana has four reviews and a 4.8-star average, all of them five stars. They're happy, but two of them have a very practical note about sizing and the sash. So this review covers what's in the box, how the sizes work, what buyers said, the add-ons that actually matter, and a cheaper Disguise version that includes the necklace.
What's in the box
The Deluxe Moana costume (item FUN4738AD) is officially licensed and a Made By Us exclusive. It includes two pieces: a dress and a sash. Both are 100% polyester.
The dress is ponte knit, a thicker, stretchy knit that holds its shape better than thin jersey. It has a sublimated print, meaning the tapa-cloth pattern is printed right into the fabric, and it zips up the center back. The top is a tube-style bodice with trim along the chest and length-adjustable clear plastic shoulder straps. The skirt has a top layer with fringe tassels, which gives it some movement and texture, like the layered skirt in the movie.
The sash is also ponte knit with the same sublimated print, and you tie it around your waist however you like. It's the finishing piece that makes the outfit look layered rather than just a printed dress.
The listing notes that the "necklace and wig [are] sold separately." For Moana, the necklace is a big deal. It's the one piece of jewelry that basically is the plot of the first movie.
How the sizes work
The Deluxe Moana comes in X-Small through X-Large, and the pricing is a little strange. X-Small, Large and X-Large cost $79.99. Small and Medium cost $89.99. So the most common sizes cost $10 more, probably because they're the most in demand. It's a good reminder to check the price for your size before you add it to your cart.
The size chart covers the body measurements plus the length of both the dress and the sash. The X-Small is 31 inches at the chest and 25 at the waist. The Small is 33 and 27. The Medium is 35 and 29. The Large is 38 and 32. And the X-Large is 41½ and 35½.
The dress length barely changes, from 37¾ inches on the X-Small to 39 inches on the X-Large. On most women, that's around the knee or just below. The sash length does change, from 48 inches on the X-Small to 58½ inches on the X-Large.
And that sash length is the number to pay attention to. It's the one buyers mention.
What Deluxe Moana buyers said
All four reviews are five stars, and the praise is consistent. A buyer who's 5'2" titled her review "I love this costume so much" and wrote, "I bought this costume and everything is on point! the strong clear straps to the good quality zipper and even the detailing of the scarf and dress is phenomenal! I 100% recommend to a friend." Jane Macaspac said, "This costume is super cute, fits comfortably and is well made."
But two reviewers noticed the same thing about fit. One, in August 2026, left a very short review titled "Moana": "Dress run small."
The other one, lakeside Mama, left the most useful review of the bunch. She's 5'2" and 146 pounds, and she titled it "Very Authentic of Movie Character." "This costume is so cute! It is very accurate of the movie costume. The only problem I have with it is the sash wasn't very long. I bought the medium and it was a bit snug (5'2' - 146 lbs) so I ordered the large and will combine the two sashes to make it long enough to tie and hang down as shown in the photo as advertised. Other than that, I absolutely love this costume!"
That's a clever fix, but not one most people want to pay for. So here's what her review tells you. First, the dress may run a little small, so if you're near the top of a size range, go up. With a zipper and a tube top, there's not much stretch to spare. Second, the sash may not be long enough to tie and hang down the way it does in the product photo. If you want that look, plan on a separate scarf or a length of fabric in a similar color, or tie the sash in a simple knot and let it be.
It's worth noting that going up one size also buys you a longer sash, from 52 inches on a Medium to 55 on a Large. That helps a little. Still, lakeside Mama needed two to get the look she wanted.
The plus-size version
There's also a Plus Size Deluxe Disney Moana Costume for Women for $89.99, in sizes 1X through 6X. It includes the same ponte knit dress and sash. The listing says it "runs true to size," and the 2X, for example, has a 46-inch chest and 43-inch waist.
It has one review, from Amanda, who's 5'8" and bought a 2X, titled "Terrific costume." "It's soft and very comfortable- definitely needs a strapless bra- but it's authentic and fun to wear. Splurge and get the accessories. They make the outfit!"
That strapless bra tip applies to the standard version too, since both have the same tube-style top with clear straps.
The cheaper option with a necklace
HalloweenCostumes.com also sells a Disney Moana Costume for Women (item DI14238) by Disguise for $79.99, in Small, Medium and Large. It's a different design. It has a bandeau-style top with elastic at the upper edge and back lower edge, lace trim, a printed geometric pattern and an asymmetrical knot detail, plus clear adjustable shoulder straps. The skirt has an elastic waistband and an all-over print designed to look like woven grass. The top front panel and the waist sash are 100% cotton.
The big difference is that it includes a plastic necklace with the Heart of Te Fiti pendant, and the necklace "opens to reveal the heart of Te Fiti." That's a nice detail, and it saves you about $16 on a separate necklace. Its three reviews are all five stars, with one buyer saying the "costume was perfect!"
So which one is better? The Deluxe has more sizes and a thicker, more structured ponte knit dress. The Disguise version is a two-piece top and skirt with an elastic waist, which may be more forgiving on fit, and it includes the necklace. If you're between sizes on the Deluxe chart, the Disguise version is worth a look.
What to add
This is where Moana gets expensive, and where Amanda's advice, "Splurge and get the accessories," comes in.
The necklace comes first. The Disney Moana Necklace (item DI24861) by Disguise costs $15.99. It's a blue stone pendant with gold detailing and faux pearls on hemp-textured cording, 16 inches long with a 2.5-inch pendant. The listing says "the blue stone is the color of the ocean and capped with gold that is detailed with symbolic navigation imagery." It's the single most recognizable accessory, so if you only buy one extra, buy this.
Then there's the oar. The Disney Moana Light Up Costume Oar Accessory by Disguise is listed at $29.99 on the product page and $24.99 on the Moana category page, so check the price in your cart. It lights up, which is a fun touch for trick-or-treating after dark. The Disney Moana Flower Costume Headband is $15.99.
Now the hair. Moana's long, thick, wavy dark hair is a huge part of her look. The only Moana wig the site lists is the Disney Moana Deluxe Child Wig for $24.99, and as the name says, it's made for kids. For adults, a long, dark, wavy wig from the site's general wig selection or your own hair with some volume will work better. If your hair is already long and dark, a little sea salt spray and a flower tucked behind one ear will do the trick.
For shoes, Moana goes barefoot most of the time. For a party, simple sandals are your friend.
Bringing the crew
Moana's sidekicks are some of the most fun companion costumes out there, and the site sells a lot of them. The Disney Moana Hei Hei Headband & Tail Accessory Kit and the Pua Headband & Tail Kit are $19.99 each, which is an easy way for a friend or a kid to join as the chicken or the pig. For a bigger commitment, there's an Adult Disney Moana Hei Hei Costume for $99.99 and a Pua Moana Adult Costume for $79.99.
If you want to carry your sidekick instead, the Disney Hei Hei Costume Companion Purse is $39.99, and the Kakamora Moana Costume Companion Bag is $34.99, for fans of the little coconut pirates.
And for Maui, there's an Adult Disney Moana Maui Costume Kit for $34.99, a Maui Fish Hook Prop for $24.99 and a bigger Maui Hook Accessory Prop for $39.99. Moana and Maui is a great couples or friends costume, especially if one of you is willing to do the "You're Welcome" eyebrow.
What a full Moana costs
Here's how it adds up. A Medium Deluxe Moana is $89.99. Add the $15.99 necklace, and you're at $105.98. Add the light-up oar, and you're somewhere between $130.97 and $135.97, depending on which oar price you get. The flower headband adds another $15.99.
If you pick an X-Small, Large or X-Large, take $10 off. And if you go with the Disguise version, which already includes a necklace, you can save a bit more.
Summary
The Deluxe Disney Moana costume is a two-piece set with a ponte knit dress and a matching sash, both printed with Moana's tapa pattern, for $79.99 to $89.99. Its four reviews are all five stars and praise the quality and accuracy, but two say the dress runs small and one found the sash too short. The necklace and oar cost extra, and so does the hair, and they make a big difference. A cheaper Disguise version includes a Heart of Te Fiti necklace, and there's a plus-size Deluxe in sizes up to 6X.
So, is it worth it?
Yes, especially for fans who want the most movie-accurate version. Every review is five stars, and the ponte knit and clear straps sound well made for a costume. The fit and sash issues are real, but they're easy to work around if you know about them in advance.
I'll admit I was surprised the sash was the main complaint. It seems like such a small piece, but lakeside Mama's review makes it clear it's part of what makes the outfit look finished. A spare scarf in a matching color is a cheap fix.
So measure your chest and waist, and size up if you're anywhere near the top of a range. Buy the necklace, since it's what makes you Moana instead of just someone in a printed dress. Add an oar if you can, sort out your hair and bring a friend in a Hei Hei headband. Then spend the night being very patient with the chicken. Moana had to be.
