How to Dress Up as the Whole Scooby-Doo Gang Without Splitting Up

  • Ethan Montgomery

Every episode of Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! follows the same plan. The gang rolls up in the Mystery Machine, someone says "Let's split up," the monster shows up, and the dog and the hungriest guy in the group run the other way. It's been working since 1969. It also happens to be one of the best group costumes ever made, because there are exactly five of them, each one instantly recognizable, and they all wear the same outfit in every single episode. HalloweenCostumes.com sells the whole Mystery Inc. lineup, and the place to start is the dog himself: the Deluxe Scooby-Doo Adult Costume by FUN Costumes for $69.99.

The other four are much cheaper. Shaggy and Fred are $29.99 each, and Daphne and Velma are $29.99 to $34.99. So a five-person gang costs about $200 for the costumes, or about $260 if everyone adds the matching wig.

Most of these costumes have real reviews, and some have quite a few. This guide covers each member of the gang, what's in the bag, what buyers said and a few tips for keeping the group together.

Scooby-Doo: the star of the show

The Deluxe Scooby-Doo costume (item FUN1434AD) is the biggest and most detailed piece of the set. It includes a jumpsuit with attached mitts and a tail, a headpiece and a pair of shoe covers, all in 100% polyester short-pile faux fur. The jumpsuit zips up the front and has a contrasting collar with an embroidered dog tag, plus printed spots on the back and sleeves. The mitts have printed paw pads and flip back so you can use your hands. And the headpiece has a soft-sculpted muzzle and ears with embroidered details, and closes under the chin with hook-and-loop.

It has five reviews, all five stars. Robby, who's 66 inches and 190 pounds and bought a Large, wrote that it was "well made" and "would easily fit a taller, thicker man," and he liked that "the face is embroidered, not ironed-on." He called it "a steal compared to other costumes of a similar price." A 5'6" buyer in a Medium said it was "Really nice quality too and not super hot," which is a big compliment for a faux fur suit.

The headpiece is the part people aren't sure about. That same Medium buyer said "the head is a little big," and Chandra Thomas, who bought a Large, wrote, "I just wanted it to look more like Scooby. So I did not use the hat like part for Scooby's face. I bought another Scooby mask separately and this worked great."

So the suit is the star. The headpiece is fine, but if your Scooby is picky about the face, plan on a backup.

If $69.99 is too much, there's a cheaper option. The Scooby Doo Kit is on sale for $19.99, down from $24.99, and includes a headband with ears and a faux leather collar with an "SD" dog tag. With a brown hoodie from home, it's a quick, lightweight Scooby.

Shaggy: the one with the snacks

The Scooby Doo Shaggy Costume for Men (item FUN1436AD) costs $29.99 and includes a lime green V-neck shirt and pants with an elastic waistband. The shirt is a cotton blend, so it feels more like a normal tee than most costume tops.

It has nine reviews and a 4.9-star average, which is about as good as it gets. Tanya, who's 6 feet tall and bought a Medium, wrote, "Sizing was accurate. Pants were a bit thin on the material but otherwise no complaints." Another 6-foot buyer said, "Perfect look and fit. I usually wear medium shirts, the large fit just right." And Jenny, shopping for her fiancé, said "he's usually a large but we got him a extra large and it fit perfect!!"

So Shaggy may run a touch small for some people, and sizing up seems to work well. One thing to know: the site's Q&A says this costume is non-returnable, so check the size chart carefully before you order. And add the $14.99 Men's Scooby Doo Shaggy Costume Wig if your Shaggy doesn't have the hair for it.

Fred: the guy with the plan

The Scooby Doo Fred Costume for Men (item FUN1437AD) is on sale for $29.99, down from $39.99. It includes a long-sleeved pullover shirt with a polo-style placket and collar, blue jersey knit pants with an elastic back waistband and an orange jersey ascot. The shirt is 65% polyester and 35% cotton, and the ascot and pants are polyester.

The ascot is the key piece. Without it, Fred is just a guy in a white shirt. With it, he's ready to set a trap.

Fred has two reviews. One is four stars with no comment. The other, from September 2026, says, "Ordered this for our family group costume. It fits amazing and is even better than we expected." That's exactly the use case this guide is about.

For Fred's blond hair, there's a Scooby Doo Men's Fred Wig for $14.99. And if your Fred needs bigger sizes, there's a Plus Size Deluxe Scooby Doo Fred Costume for Men for $69.99.

Daphne: danger-prone and well dressed

The Scooby Doo Women's Daphne Costume (item FUN1438AD) costs $34.99 and includes a purple dress, a lime green scarf and a lilac headband. The dress is a long-sleeved stretch knit pullover, 92% polyester and 8% spandex. The headband has plastic teeth on the inside, so it stays put.

It has 13 reviews and a 4-star average, and they're more mixed than the others. The happy reviews praise the feel. A buyer who's 5'4" and 115 pounds and bought a Small wrote, "It fit great and looked great. The quality was awesome. soft material and stretchy." A petite buyer who wears a size 0 or 00 said the X-Small fit, and added, "I love this costume! Adorable and affordable. I also bought the wig and it's super cute!!" And one longtime fan wrote, "Originally from 1968 this Daphne doesn't disappoint and works year after year."

The critical reviews focus on the fabric, the length and the scarf. Ashley said it's "thin and clingy." Another buyer wrote, "The scarf which would be the easiest thing to make reasonable is a very small piece of polyester and does not tie well at all. The costume runs very short as well." And one buyer said an X-Small "fit like a medium."

So Daphne's sizing reports point in both directions, and the dress may be short on taller women. A pair of opaque purple or pink tights helps with both the length and the clingy fabric. And if the scarf is too small, a slightly bigger green scarf from a thrift store will tie much better.

The Scooby Doo Women's Daphne Wig costs $14.99, and there's a Women's Plus Size Scooby Doo Daphne Costume for $39.99.

Velma: the brains

The Retro Scooby Doo Velma Costume for Women (item FUN1435AD) costs $29.99 to $34.99, depending on size. It includes an orange turtleneck, an orange skirt with an elastic waistband, a pair of knee-high orange socks and black-framed glasses with tinted blue lenses. The shirt is 60% cotton and 40% polyester, which should feel comfortable.

It has 15 reviews and a 4.1-star average, with 60% five stars. The fans are very happy. One parent bought it for a petite 15-year-old and wrote, "The costume came right on time and fit perfectly! Loved the costume and my daughter got so many compliments! Now, I wanna do the whole Scooby Do gand for my family and I next year!" Another buyer, who wore a Large, said, "The quality of the costume was higher than I expected from a Halloween outfit."

The complaints are mostly about the skirt. One buyer wrote, "The skirt is way too small and wouldn't get up my legs and didn't stretch much and there is no zipper. Also you could see my bra through the shirt." A parent who bought a Medium said it "arrived way to small" and that her daughter didn't feel comfortable with how short the skirt was. MaryJo, who bought an X-Large, liked it but said it was "A bit smaller than I expected for XL size."

So Velma tends to run small in the skirt. Size up if you're between sizes, and wear a camisole under the turtleneck. Leggings or tights under the skirt help too.

One more tip comes from a buyer named JD: "The glasses with this Costume are a bit dark to see threw so I took the plastic out of the Lenses it's very easy to pop them out and just were the Frames." That's a smart move, and it means Velma won't be the one who actually loses her glasses on a dark porch. "Jinkies" not included.

The Scooby Doo Women's Velma Wig costs $14.99, and there's a Retro Plus Size Scooby Doo Velma Costume for $44.99.

What the whole gang costs

Here's a sample budget for all five members. Scooby is $69.99, Shaggy is $29.99, Fred is $29.99, Daphne is $34.99 and Velma is $34.99, for a total of $199.95. If Velma is an X-Small, take $5 off.

Add the four human wigs at $14.99 each, and you're at $259.91. That's about $52 per person, which is very reasonable for a full licensed group costume.

To save more, swap the Deluxe Scooby for the $19.99 Scooby Doo Kit and a brown hoodie, and the gang drops to about $150 before wigs.

Don't forget the monster

Every Scooby-Doo episode needs a villain to unmask, and this is where your group can have the most fun. The site sells several monster masks, including a Scooby-Doo Mr. Hyde Mask for Adults for $69.99, a Scooby Doo Dracula Mask for $49.99 and an Adult Scooby Doo Creeper Vacuform Mask for $19.99. A Scooby Doo The Creeper Mask for Adults, at $69.99, is listed as coming soon.

The best move is to have one friend play the monster all night, then pull off the mask at the end to reveal a grumpy old man. "And I would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for you meddling kids" is the only acceptable line at that point.

Finishing touches

A few props make the gang feel complete. The Scooby Doo Mystery Machine Purse costs $34.99, and it's a perfect bag for Daphne or Velma to carry phones and candy. A box of dog treats labeled "Scooby Snacks" is a funny prop for Shaggy. And a magnifying glass for Velma or a coil of rope for Fred's trap adds a lot to group photos.

For shoes, keep it simple. Brown or black shoes for Shaggy and Fred, purple flats for Daphne, and red or brown shoes with Velma's knee socks.

Tips for keeping the gang together

A five-person costume works best when everyone orders at the same time. Several of these costumes have sizing notes, so give yourselves time to exchange anything that doesn't fit, especially Velma's skirt and Daphne's dress. And remember that Shaggy is non-returnable, so double-check his size before ordering.

Assign Scooby to whoever handles heat best. A full faux fur suit is the warmest costume in the group, even if one buyer said it's "not super hot."

And practice the classic group photo. Everyone leans in, Scooby in front, Fred in the middle with his arms crossed, and someone holding a flashlight under their chin. It never gets old.

Summary

HalloweenCostumes.com sells the full Scooby-Doo gang, anchored by the $69.99 Deluxe Scooby-Doo costume, which has five five-star reviews for quality, with the headpiece as the only weak spot. Shaggy is the best-reviewed of the humans, with a 4.9-star average, while Fred has only two reviews but they're positive. Daphne and Velma have more mixed feedback, mostly about short skirts and thin fabric. A full five-person gang costs about $200, or about $260 with wigs, and there's a cheaper Scooby kit if you want to save.

So, is the Scooby-Doo gang worth it?

Yes, especially for families and friend groups of five. It's one of the most recognizable group costumes out there, and the costumes are mostly affordable. The reviews are strongest for Scooby and Shaggy, which is fitting, since they're the ones doing most of the running.

I'll admit I love that nobody in this group needs a complicated costume. Four of the five are basically colorful outfits from 1969, and the fifth is a big brown dog. That makes it one of the easiest group costumes to pull together, even on short notice.

So order together, size up for Velma and check Shaggy's chart twice. Pop the lenses out of Velma's glasses, and pick one friend to be the monster. Then pile into the car, put on the theme song and remember the most important rule of Mystery Inc.: whatever you do, don't split up.

Pros:
  • All five members of Mystery Inc. are available from the same site
  • Shaggy has a 4.9-star average from nine reviews
  • The Deluxe Scooby gets five-star reviews for quality and comfort
  • Fred, Shaggy and Velma start at $29.99, making the gang affordable
  • Matching wigs are only $14.99 each, and villain masks are available too
Cons:
  • Velma's skirt runs small, according to several buyers
  • Daphne's dress can be thin and short, and the scarf is small
  • Scooby's headpiece is the weak spot of an otherwise great suit
  • Shaggy is non-returnable, according to the site's Q&A
  • Fred has only two reviews
