Twenty-five years ago, DreamWorks took every fairy tale Disney had polished and dropped it in a swamp. Shrek was a grumpy ogre who wanted to be left alone, Fiona was a princess with a secret and a surprisingly good kick, and together they made "happily ever after" look a lot more fun when nobody had to change who they were. The movie turned into four films, a Broadway musical and roughly a million memes, and the pair is still one of the most recognizable couples costumes out there. Together, that's $139.98, or $144.98 if Fiona needs an X-Large. That's a lot of money to look like you live in a swamp. But both come with solid reviews, and with one very consistent sizing warning.

Shrek is a jumpsuit plus a big vinyl head, while Fiona is a velvet gown plus a crown. So here's what's in each box, how they fit, and what buyers had to say, including a couple of honest notes on how hard it is to see out of an ogre's face.

Shrek, stuffed and ready

The Shrek costume (item DI143739) is officially licensed and a HalloweenCostumes.com exclusive. It comes with two pieces: a jumpsuit and a mask.

The jumpsuit is 100% polyester with fiberfill stuffing, and it closes with hook-and-loop at the center back. It's built to look like several pieces sewn together. There's a stuffed pad sewn into the inside of the shirt front "for plump look," which is the costume's polite way of saying "ogre belly." The front vest panels are sewn right into the shoulder and side seams, and the pants portion has a printed plaid. So you get Shrek's cream shirt, brown vest and pants in one easy-to-put-on piece.

The mask is molded vinyl, not latex, which the site confirms in its Q&A. That's worth knowing if you have a latex allergy, or if you've ever smelled a new latex mask straight out of the bag. The mask includes Shrek's full head, trumpet ears and all, and it's the main reason this costume works. Without it, you're just a man in a very cozy onesie.

The listing is also honest about the one downside: "Small eye openings will restrict vision." So you can look exactly like Shrek, or you can see where you're going. It's hard to do both at the same time.

How Shrek fits

The Shrek costume comes in Small, Medium, Large and Large/X-Large, all for $79.99.

The chest runs from 44 inches on the Small to 54 on the Large/X-Large, which is roomy by design. Shrek is not a slim guy. The waist is elastic with a wide range: 30 to 38 inches on the Small, 32 to 40 on the Medium, then a big jump to 42 to 50 on the Large and 46 to 54 on the Large/X-Large. The torso measurement goes from 32 to 35 inches, and the inseam is 30 inches on the Small and 31 on the rest. Sleeves are 26 to 26.5 inches.

That jump between Medium and Large is the thing to notice. If your waist is somewhere around 40 or 41 inches, you're right in the gap between the two, so it's worth measuring carefully. The stuffed belly adds room in front, so if you're between sizes, the bigger one probably won't hang on you as much as a regular jumpsuit would.

What Shrek buyers said

The Shrek costume has seven reviews and a 4.6-star average, with six five-star ratings and one four-star. The reviews are mostly about three things: the mask looks great, the fit works on a lot of body types and seeing out of it is hard.

Ben Smith titled his review "Shrek-ing perfect" and wrote, "Great costume and mask! Fit me perfectly and was a winner in our 'swamp'! Really made our shrek themed trunk or treat complete! 10 out of 10!" Tori Haussler said the mask was "amazing and even better than the photos on the website!" though she added, "I wish the vest was a separate piece, but overall a decent costume."

The fit comments are encouraging, especially for tall buyers. One parent wrote, "I was afraid it would be too short for my son cause he's 6'4" tall but it fit great!! He loved how easy it was to take off and put back on." Dan, who's 6'1" and 220 pounds and bought a Large/X-Large, said, "The costume is good quality fits very well." Another buyer at 5'8" and 185 pounds, also in Large/X-Large, kept it short: "Costume was awesome."

Then there's the mask problem. Dan added, "Mask looks amazing but can't wear for long due to very limited vision and it's a little rough breathing." Debbie, who listed her size as 2X-Large and gave the only four-star rating, wrote, "Great costume and got me an an award! It was a little hard to see out of but over all a great hit."

So the pattern is clear. People love how Shrek looks, and they love the jumpsuit. The mask is great for photos and costume contests and less great for walking around a party for three hours. Plan to take it off between photos, especially if there are stairs involved, or a punch bowl.

The mask-free option

If the full vinyl head sounds like too much, there's a simpler route: green face paint. The site recommends Mehron Premium Greasepaint Makeup in green for $14.99, Graftobian Deluxe Green Makeup for $19.99 and a Mehron Ogre Green CreamBlend Makeup Stick for $29.99. An Adult Bald Cap costs $6.99, which helps if your hair is getting in the way of the green.

There's also an Adult Shrek Costume Kit for $24.99, with a plastic Shrek mask and printed green gloves. The mask has mesh eyes and nostril holes, which may help a bit with airflow, but the listing also says the mesh eyes mean "limited vision." It has no reviews yet.

For most people, the included vinyl mask for photos plus a little green face paint for the rest of the night is probably the best of both worlds.

Fiona, in velvet

The Fiona costume (item DI167479) is also by Disguise and officially licensed. It includes two pieces: a dress and a headband with a crown.

The dress is velvet, with a green velour body in 93% polyester and 7% elastane, and it closes with hook-and-loop down the center back. It has long sleeves with elastic bands that loop around your middle finger, the way a medieval gown would, and a floor-length skirt with an asymmetrical hem. The gold details are where it gets fancy: metallic gold ribbon trim at the neckline and waist, plus a gold glitter-print floral pattern on the front and back.

The headband is covered in the same velvet and has a gold crown on top. It's the finishing touch that turns a green velvet dress into "Princess Fiona," and not "someone going to a Renaissance fair."

No wig comes with it, and Fiona's long red hair is a big part of the look. The site suggests a Long Red Wavy Women's Wig for $19.99. If you want to go as ogre Fiona, which is honestly the better version, the site also has Green Face and Body Cream Makeup for $9.99.

Fiona's size chart comes with a warning

Here's where this review gets practical. The Fiona dress comes in Small, Medium, Large and X-Large. Small through Large cost $59.99, and X-Large is $64.99.

The chart says the Small is 34 inches at the chest and 30 at the waist, with a 55-inch dress length. The Medium is 36 and 32, with a 56-inch length. The Large is 38 and 34, 57 inches long. The X-Large is 40 and 36, and 58 inches long. Sleeves run 26 to 29 inches.

On paper, those numbers look small. But three of the six reviewers say the dress runs large, even after they checked the chart.

Olivia Galyon, in August 2026, titled her review "Runs very large." "The costume itself is definitely good quality (nice material and spot-on details), but unfortunately was entirely too large. I went by the sizing chart and my own measurements, but I should've ordered at least two sizes smaller, as the dress just hangs on me."

Amber, who's 5'4" and bought an X-Large, gave it three stars and listed her own measurements: "I typically wear a 16. My waist is 38', my bust is 45', my arm length is 29' and height to shoulder is 57'. I expected it to be long, and did check the size chart, but am surprised that even with my measurements being larger than listed on the chart, it was still too large. Hopefully I can get this altered."

And a buyer who's 5'5" and 158 pounds wrote, "This is a very well made costume! Excellent material as well as craftsmanship. Pay attention to the size chart though, I had to return for a smaller size, which tends to not be the case normally with costumes."

That's the rare costume that runs big instead of small. So, even though the chart looks tight, size down if you're between sizes. And if you're right in the middle of one size, it's still worth considering the smaller one. The stretch in the velvet will help it fit either way.

There's also no plus size for Fiona, according to the Q&A. A shopper asked, and the site said plus versions "are not currently available." That's a shame, given Amber's review suggests the X-Large might work for more people than the chart implies.

What else Fiona buyers said

Beyond sizing, the Fiona reviews are warm. Janie wrote, "It fit perfect! Super cute, the dress was nice and thick. Loved it!" Erika kept it short: "Very comfortable and worth the money." And one reviewer, who signed as "In love," wrote, "Wish the had these when I was a kid."

Every reviewer, including the ones who had to return it, praised the quality. "Nice material and spot-on details," "excellent material as well as craftsmanship," "nice and thick." For a $59.99 costume, that's a lot of love for the fabric. The Fiona dress has a 4.2-star average from six reviews, with five five-star ratings and one three-star.

Extras for the swamp

If you want to bring a third friend, Donkey is the obvious choice. The site sells a Donkey Jawesome Costume Mask for $19.99, which is an easy way for someone to join without buying a full costume. There's also a Women's Shrek Fairy Godmother Costume Wig for $29.99 if one of you would rather be the villain.

For the ogre look, green makeup covers most needs. The rest, like onion breath and an unhealthy love of mud baths, is up to you.

So measure yourself, and then size Fiona down if you're between sizes. Get Shrek some green face paint for when the mask comes off.
