Toy Story Crew

There's a reason Toy Story works so well as a group costume. The whole series is about a bunch of mismatched toys who argue and panic, get lost and always end up rescuing each other. That's also a pretty accurate description of most friend groups and families on Halloween night. With Toy Story 5 in theaters this June and setting a franchise opening record, Andy's old toy box is as popular as it's been in years. HalloweenCostumes.com has one of the biggest Toy Story lineups you'll find, and the natural place to start is the sheriff himself: the Men's Disney Deluxe Toy Story Woody Costume by FUN Costumes, at $79.99 to $99.99.

From there, you can build out the rest of the crew with Buzz, Jessie, Bo Peep, Rex, Mr. Potato Head, the Aliens and a few deep cuts. This guide walks through the best option for each character, what's in the box, what real buyers said and roughly what a full group costs.

Woody: the anchor of the group

The Deluxe Woody costume (item FUN3339AD) is one of the most complete costumes on the site. It comes with eight pieces: a printed plaid shirt, a cowhide-print vest, printed denim-weave pants, a faux suede hat, a bandana, a belt with a buckle and holster, a badge and a pair of boot covers. The boot covers are a big deal for a group, since nobody has to buy cowboy boots just for one night.

It also comes in tall sizes, which is rare. X-Small through X-Large are $79.99, Medium Tall and Large Tall are $89.99, and X-Large Tall is $99.99.

The Woody costume has six reviews and a 4.3-star average. Buyers love the detail. Dolores wrote, "Costume comes with all the details which make this a great deal." Stephen said, "Came with a lot of detailed pieces and the screen printing of the material is great too!"

But half the reviewers say something runs small. Gregory, who's 5'10" and bought a Large, wrote, "Both the shirt and vest were a bit too small and the shirt tail was very short (hard to keep tucked in)." Janice said her Small was running "smaller (Small Adult) than the advertised size." And Thomas pointed out one funny detail: the vest is thin, and "the pull string is printed on it." So size up for Woody, or pick a tall size if you're over average height.

If $80 is more than you want to spend on the group leader, the site also has a Men's Toy Story Classic Woody Costume for $49.99 and a Men's Toy Story Woody Costume Kit for $29.99. There's even a Women's Deluxe Pixar Toy Story Woody Costume for $89.99, if your group's Woody isn't a guy.

Buzz Lightyear: to infinity and beyond the budget

Every Woody needs a Buzz. The best-reviewed option on the site is the Men's Deluxe Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Costume (item DI50549) by Disguise, priced at $79.99 and up depending on size. It comes in Medium, X-Large, 2X-Large and 3X.

It includes a jumpsuit, a hood, a pair of boot covers, a jet pack and two glow sticks for the wings. The jumpsuit is white with purple accents and printed control panel graphics on the arms and chest. The hood is purple with hook-and-loop fasteners. The boot covers are white foam with green toes. And the foam wings attach to the back, with clear green plastic jets that have pockets for the glow sticks.

All six reviews are five stars. A 5'8" buyer in a Medium wrote, "Fits perfectly. Great design and the best part, the glow sticks that come with it for the wings." Stephen said, "Lots of details on the wings and lots or detail on the printed jumpsuit." Sabinohdz, who bought a 3X, said it "Fits perfect and arrived fast and in great condition." And one buyer who'd worn out a previous one wrote, "This is a replacement for one like it that I wore out. It is so comfortable and easy to wear that it's one of my 'go to' costumes."

If you want a cheaper Buzz, there's an Adult Disney Toy Story Buzz Lightyear Costume for $59.99. For a woman in the group, there's a Women's Disney and Pixar Buzz Lightyear Costume for $79.99. And if you want to go big, there's an Adult Mens Prestige Buzz Lightyear Costume for $129.99 and two inflatable Buzz costumes at $99.99 each.

Jessie: the yodeling cowgirl

For Jessie, the site has several versions. The Women's Deluxe Disney Toy Story Jessie Costume by FUN Costumes costs $79.99 and comes with a shirt, pants with cowhide-print chaps sewn on, a faux leather belt and a faux suede hat with a chin cord. The shirt has a real two-button placket, with the rest of the buttons printed below, which is a clever touch.

The standard version doesn't have written reviews yet, but the plus-size version, at $79.99, has five reviews with a 3.8-star average. Buyers love the material. Elizabeth wrote that "The quality of this costume is very nice & well worth the money" and that the hat "wasn't just a flimsy little hat." But several mentioned the pants running big and the shirt running small. One buyer wrote, "I Love The Costume, but pants are too big & the shirt is small."

The wig is the other thing to know. Jessie's braid is a big part of her look, and the site's Women's Toy Story Jessie Wig costs $39.99. Its reviews are split, with some buyers saying it runs very small, and it can't be returned once opened.

If you want something simpler, the Women's Toy Story Classic Jessie Costume costs $44.99 to $49.99, and there's a Women's Jessie Glam Costume for $79.99 to $89.99 for a dressier take.

Bo Peep: the comeback queen

Bo Peep got a major makeover in Toy Story 4, trading her dress for a blue jumpsuit and a cape. The Women's Pixar Toy Story Bo Peep Costume by FUN Costumes is built on that look and costs $69.99. It includes a jersey knit jumpsuit with lace trim, a matte satin cape, a belt and a headband with a bow.

It doesn't have reviews yet, but two things are worth knowing. First, the inseam is 18 inches in every size, so the pants end around the knee, like Bo's do in the movie. Second, her staff is sold separately. The official Toy Story Bo Peep's Staff costs $19.99, but it's only 31.5 inches long, and several reviewers said it's too short for adults. Angel wrote that "it is more the length of baton than a staff." A taller crook from a craft store will look more like the film.

Rex: the nervous dinosaur

Every group needs a Rex. The Adult Deluxe Toy Story Rex Costume by FUN Costumes costs $79.99. It includes a velour jumpsuit with a front zipper, mitts attached to the sleeves, fiberfill padding at the hips and rump and an attached tail. A headpiece and shoe covers complete it. The headpiece has a view port through the mouth, edged with felt teeth, so you look out through Rex's open jaws.

It has one review, and it's a sweet one. "My oldest child wanted to match his brother and this Rex costume was perfect. He looked incredible in it."

Rex is a great choice for the friend who doesn't want to show their face, or who just wants to spend the night being dramatically worried about everything. There's also an inflatable Rex for $114.99.

The Aliens: "Ooooh"

The three-eyed Aliens from Pizza Planet are perfect for a group, because you can have as many as you want. The Adult Disney and Pixar Toy Story Alien Costume by FUN Costumes costs $79.99. It comes with a stretch velour jumpsuit with a front zipper and an attached belt, a round headpiece, two-fingered gloves and shoe covers. The headpiece has stuffing between the inner hood and outer shell "to give spherical shape," with sculpted eyes and a little antenna on top, and there's an embroidered Pizza Planet logo on the chest.

It has one five-star review that says simply, "Great quality!" There's also a Women's Disney and Pixar Toy Story Alien Costume Dress for $59.99 and an inflatable Alien for $114.99. And if you're bringing a baby, the Disney Little Space Men Baby Carrier Cover costs $29.99, which might be the cutest Toy Story item on the whole site.

Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head: read this before buying two

The Adult Mrs / Mr Potato Head Costume by Disguise costs $64.99 to $69.99, and it has more reviews than any other costume in this guide, 19 of them, with a 4.1-star average. It's a brown, foam-backed tunic with attached ears and swappable facial pieces that stick on with hook-and-loop.

Here's the catch. It's one costume, not two, but it comes with both Mr. and Mrs. pieces: round eyes, a red nose, a mustache and a toothy smile for him, and purple-lashed eyes, an oval nose, red lips and a flowered hat for her. Several buyers expected two costumes. One wrote, "Picture implies this is a couples costume, however for $80 it was a single costume with applications for both Mr and Mrs." Another said, "We thought it was two complete costumes not one with two different outer parts."

So if you want Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head as a couple, order two. The good news is that you'll have two complete sets of face pieces, so you can swap parts and argue about whose turn it is to wear the mustache, which is very in character.

There's also a Disney Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head Costume Kit for $39.99 and an Adult Mr. Potato Head Inflatable Costume for $129.99.

The deep cuts

If your group is big, or full of real fans, the site has some characters you won't see at every party. There's an Adult Disney and Pixar Toy Story Slinky Dog Costume for $149.99, a Men's Disney and Pixar Toy Story Bullseye Costume for $89.99 to $99.99 and a Toy Story Adult Hamm Inflatable Costume for $79.99.

For villains, there's the Adult Disney and Pixar Scented Lotso Toy Story Costume for $79.99, which the listing calls scented, a nod to the strawberry-smelling bear from Toy Story 3. There's also a Men's Disney and Pixar Toy Story Stinky Pete Costume for $89.99 and a Toy Story Emperor Zurg Deluxe Costume for Adults for $114.99 to $129.99. And for the friend who loves Keanu Reeves, there's a Men's Disney Pixar Toy Story Duke Caboom Costume for $69.99.

What a full crew costs

Here's a rough example for a group of six, using the main costumes in this guide. Deluxe Woody at $79.99, Deluxe Buzz at $79.99, Deluxe Jessie at $79.99, Bo Peep at $69.99, Rex at $79.99 and the Alien at $79.99 come to $469.94 for the costumes alone. Add a Jessie wig, a Bo Peep staff and a couple of pairs of gloves, and you're getting close to $550.

That's a lot, but split six ways, it's about $90 each. And there are easy ways to save. The Woody Costume Kit at $29.99, the classic Buzz at $59.99 and the Potato Head kit at $39.99 can bring the total down a lot, especially for people who just want to join in.

Tips for a Toy Story group

A few things make a big difference for a group like this.

Order early, and order everyone's at the same time. Several of these costumes have reviews about sizing, so you'll want time to swap sizes. Woody and Jessie, in particular, tend to run small in the top.

Pick one or two people to wear the big headpieces. The Rex and Alien headpieces are fun, and so is Buzz's hood, but they limit vision and get warm. Mix them with characters who show their faces, like Woody or Jessie, so someone in the group can actually see where you're going.

Bring the props. A Pizza Planet cup, a toy claw for the Aliens to say "The claaaw" at, a Bo Peep staff and Buzz's glow sticks will make photos much better.

And for families with young kids, remember that most of these characters have kids' versions too. A little Buzz or a tiny Alien in a baby carrier will steal every photo.

Summary

HalloweenCostumes.com has one of the biggest adult Toy Story costume lineups out there, and the Deluxe Woody at $79.99 to $99.99 is a strong starting point, with eight pieces and tall sizes, though it runs small. The Deluxe Buzz is the best-reviewed partner, with six five-star reviews. Jessie and Bo Peep round out the main crew, with Rex and the Aliens for bigger groups, and Potato Head buyers should know it's one costume with both sets of face pieces. For a group of six in deluxe costumes, plan on around $470 before wigs and props.

So, is a Toy Story crew worth it?

Yes, especially for families and friend groups who want a costume everyone recognizes. Toy Story has a character for every personality, from the leader to the worrier to the one who just says "Ooooh" all night. And with so many options, you can mix deluxe costumes with cheaper kits to fit any budget.

I'll admit the Potato Head reviews made me laugh. A costume that comes with both Mr. and Mrs. parts but only one potato is the most Toy Story problem possible. It's also an easy fix: buy two, and let the arguing begin.

So start with Woody, add a Buzz, and build out from there. Size up for Woody and Jessie, check the Potato Head math and grab a taller staff for Bo. Then gather the whole crew for one big group photo, preferably in front of a toy box. You've got a friend in me, and apparently five or six more in matching costumes.
