The Kids' Sonic Movie Costume Is Cheap and Comfy. Bring Your Own Gloves and Red Sneakers

  • Emilia Westwood

Sonic the Hedgehog has been running since 1991, when Sega put a blue hedgehog with an attitude problem on the Genesis to take on Mario. For a while, it looked like he'd stay a 90s video game mascot. Then the movies happened. The first Sonic film came out in 2020, the sequel followed in 2022, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 broke the franchise's box office record with more than $425 million worldwide, according to Sega. Sonic 4 is already dated for March 19, 2027. So for a lot of kids, Sonic isn't a retro game character. He's a movie star with a lot of friends. HalloweenCostumes.com sells the Sonic Movie 2 Hedgehog Costume for Kids by Disguise for $39.99.

That's one of the cheaper Sonic options on the site, and it's a simple design: one hooded jumpsuit, no extra pieces.

It has six reviews and a 4.8-star average, and they're short but useful, with real heights and weights. So this review covers what's in the bag, how it fits, the one complaint about the hood, and what you'll want to add to make it look like the movie Sonic.

What's in the bag

The Sonic Movie 2 costume (item DI124749) is officially licensed and includes one piece: a hooded jumpsuit. It's made of 100% polyester velour, with polyurethane foam.

The jumpsuit closes with hook-and-loop at the center front, which makes it easy for kids to get in and out of without help. The hood has foam-backed spikes on the sides and soft-sculpted ears with embroidered eyes on top. Velour is soft and a little stretchy, so it's comfortable for a long night.

That's it. There are no gloves, no shoe covers and no tail. For Sonic, the white gloves and the red sneakers are a big part of the look, so you'll want to plan for those separately. More on that below.

One parent, Alex, said, "I thought it was going to have a zipper but it has velcro closures which is fine." So if you were picturing a zip-up, know that it's hook-and-loop.

How the sizes work

The Sonic costume comes in five sizes: 2T, 3T/4T, 4/6, 7/8 and 10/12, all for $39.99. That's a wide range, from toddlers to about age 12.

The size chart gives four body measurements per size. The 2T has a 24-inch chest, 11-inch sleeve, 20-inch torso and 9-inch inseam. The 4/6 is 28, 18, 24 and 19 inches. The 7/8 is 31, 19, 26 and 21.5. And the 10/12 is 34, 20, 28 and 24.

The 3T/4T has a 26-inch chest, a 22-inch torso and a 14-inch inseam. Its sleeve is listed as 70.5 inches, which is clearly a typo on the site, since that's longer than most adults are tall. It's probably somewhere around 15 or 16 inches, between the 2T and 4/6. If sleeve length matters for your toddler, ask customer service to confirm.

The chart doesn't list height or weight, but the reviews help. Alex's son is 119 centimeters, about 3'11", and 56 pounds, and Alex said "7/8 was a great size for him." Another parent said her 7-year-old daughter "is about 4'2" and about 55 pounds" and the costume "fits her perfectly."

And one parent, Rachel, summed it up: "I used the listed measurements to choose a size and they were spot on!!" So for this costume, the chart seems reliable. Measure your kid's torso and chest, and pick the size that matches.

What parents said

All six reviews are five stars. The comments are short, but they're consistently happy.

Jessica Pavlishin wrote, "It was a pretty cool costume. My child loved and that's what matters!" Alex said, "My son loves his Sonic Costume!" And the parent of the 7-year-old daughter was glad it fit right away.

The most detailed review came from Joe Sandaker, titled "Little man loves it." "Everything about this costume is great except the hood. Sonic's hair isn't rigid and does not allow for it to be positioned without a lot of effort. Otherwise solid costume, I'd say as good as my grumpy care bear costume."

That's the one real complaint. The spikes on the hood are foam-backed, but they're soft, so they may not stand out the way Sonic's quills do in the movie. They might flop or lie flat.

Fixing the floppy spikes

If the spikes won't stay where you want them, here are a few easy tricks. You can slide a strip of craft foam or thin cardboard inside each spike from the hood's inner side, if there's an opening, to give it structure. A few small stitches or safety pins on the inside of the hood can hold the spikes in a backward angle. And a little fabric stiffener spray, the kind sold at craft stores, can help the velour hold its shape.

Or embrace it. A kid running at full speed in a Sonic hood, spikes flopping in the wind, looks pretty much like Sonic anyway.

Gloves and shoes

Here's where the costume needs a little help. Sonic's look is a blue body with tan details, plus white gloves and red sneakers with a white strap. The jumpsuit covers the blue, but not the gloves or shoes.

For gloves, any plain white gloves will do. Dollar stores and craft stores sell them, and they're easy to replace if your kid loses one, which they will.

For shoes, red sneakers are perfect. If your kid already has a pair, you're done. If not, red shoe covers or even red socks over sneakers can work in a pinch.

If you want it all in one bundle, the site sells a Kid's Sonic 2 Movie Costume Accessory Kit for $49.99. It includes a hood with inflatable quills, a pair of gloves and a pair of shoe covers with lightning bolt graphics. That inflatable hood might also fix the floppy-spike problem, since the quills fill with air. But at $49.99, the kit costs more than the costume itself, so it only makes sense if you want everything to match exactly.

The deluxe Sonic, for more detail

If you want a more complete costume, there's the Sonic 2 Kid's Deluxe Sonic Movie Costume by Disguise for $59.99. It includes a blue velour jumpsuit with a tan front, a detachable fiber-filled tail, an inflatable headpiece with spikes and white foam and jersey knit gloves. It comes in 4/6, 7/8 and 10/12.

That's a lot more in the bag for $20 more. But its reviews are mixed. One parent said the "costume is well made and fits perfectly." Another said the headpiece "will not stay on" and "slides off and chokes my child," and added that inflating it makes the fit worse.

That second review is worth taking seriously. Any headpiece that slides down around a child's neck is a safety problem. If you go with the deluxe, check the fit carefully, keep an eye on your kid and take the headpiece off if it slips. The classic version reviewed here has an attached hood, so it doesn't have that issue.

Other Sonic options

The site sells a lot of Sonic costumes for kids. There's a Toddler Sonic 2 Movie Costume for $39.99 and a Sonic 2 Infant Sonic Costume for $39.99 for the littlest fans. There's also a Sonic the Hedgehog Hooded Costume for Kids by Rubies for $49.99, a Child Sonic Costume by Rubies for $29.99 and a Sonic 2 The Movie Sonic Girl's Costume for $49.99. And for kids who want to look really big, an Inflatable Kid's Sonic the Hedgehog Costume costs $99.99.

For a smaller budget, a Kid's Sonic the Hedgehog Costume Mask costs $12.99. Paired with a blue hoodie, white gloves and red sneakers, it's a quick, cheap Sonic.

Building Team Sonic

Sonic is better with friends, and the site has most of the gang. For a sibling, there's a Kid's Sonic 2 Tails Movie Costume for $39.99, a Kid's Sonic the Hedgehog Knuckles Costume by Rubies for $39.99, a Kid's Sonic the Hedgehog Shadow Costume for $49.99 and a Girl's Sonic the Hedgehog Classic Amy Rose Costume for $39.99.

For parents, the most fun choice is the villain. The Adult Deluxe Dr Eggman Costume costs $79.99, and a parent dressed as Eggman chasing a group of kids dressed as Sonic and friends is a very good use of Halloween. There's also a Sonic 2 Adult Sonic Movie Costume for $79.99 if a parent would rather match.

For extras, there's a Sonic the Hedgehog Costume Ring Accessory for $15.99, a gold ring like the ones Sonic collects, and a Sonic the Hedgehog Movie 3 Treat Pail for $19.99. Every piece of candy is basically a ring, right?

Summary

The Sonic Movie 2 Hedgehog Costume for Kids from Disguise is a one-piece velour jumpsuit with an attached, spiky hood, for $39.99. All six reviews are five stars, with parents saying it fits as described and their kids love it. The only real complaint is that the spikes are floppy. Gloves and red sneakers aren't included, so plan for those. For a more detailed look, the $59.99 deluxe version adds a tail, gloves and an inflatable head, but one parent reported the headpiece sliding down around their child's neck.

So, is it worth it?

Yes, for most families. At $39.99, it's an easy, comfortable Sonic costume that's well reviewed and simple to wear. The missing gloves and shoes are cheap to fix, and plenty of kids already own red sneakers.

I'll admit I liked how simple this one is. There's no inflatable head to manage, no tail to lose and no mask to fall off. Just a soft jumpsuit with a hood, which is exactly what you want for a kid who's going to spend the night running between houses.

So check your kid's chest and torso against the chart, grab some white gloves and red sneakers, and maybe stiffen the spikes if they matter. Then step back. Your kid is going to spend the whole night trying to prove they're the fastest thing on the block, and honestly, you won't be able to keep up.

Pros:
  • Only $39.99, among the cheapest Sonic costumes on the site
  • One-piece velour jumpsuit with an attached hood, so nothing to lose
  • Front hook-and-loop closure makes it easy for kids to put on
  • Five sizes, from 2T to 10/12
  • All six reviews are five stars, and parents say the size chart is accurate
Cons:
  • No gloves, shoes or tail included
  • The hood spikes are soft and may not stand out
  • The 3T/4T sleeve length on the chart is a typo
  • No height or weight on the size chart
  • Some kids may expect a zipper instead of hook-and-loop
